Joy of science: Premier NIAS trains students

BENGALURU: How can technology in the conventional white stick, used by the visually-challenged, help them cross the road more safely? Can agar-agar, a food thickening agent, substitute gelatin as capsule cover? Can a noise pollution measuring device be made at home? These are just a few of the solutions 11-13 year old children from different schools in the city worked on at a recent workshop held at the Advanced Learning Centres (ALCs) set up by National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS).

Can a person with low vision become doctor: Supreme Court to examine

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine whether a person suffering from disability of 'low vision', in which eyesight cannot be corrected or improved, can be allowed to pursue MBBS course and treat patients.

This contentious issue came up before a vacation bench of justices U U Lalit and Deepak Gupta which wondered whether it would be feasible to allow a person with visual impairment to become a doctor and treat patients.

Blind students of class 9 and 10 in Odisha to get free Braille textbooks!

Measure to be adopted in schools from 2018-19 academic session

From the current academic session, all visually impaired students of Class IX and X in Odisha will be provided free Braille textbooks.

Earlier, the Odisha Primary Education Programme Authority was providing free Braille textbooks to all visually impaired students studying in Class I to VIII in government-managed schools. From this year, this measure has been extended to Class IX and X students as well.

Central institute for blind persons in Tamil Nadu closed for almost a year, students protest

The regional centre of the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities in Karayanchavadi has remained closed for over six months. A student in the centre said the institute had not reopened after Puja holidays last year.

Courses were not conducted since August at the institute which was established in 1988.

The centre offered a few courses including Braille shorthand and a diploma course in executive secretaryship.
