Software provides easy access to Braille music scores

Hiroko Oyamaguchi is volunteer transcriber who transforms musical scores into Braille, enabling visually impaired musicians to read the notes.

It can be a long process even for a 30-year veteran like Oyamaguchi, 62, who says a complicated piece of Debussy music can take her up to a month to complete.
That all began to change in 2006.

EMC India COE holds awareness drive on visual impairment

Many employees were amazed with the skills and capabilities of the volunteers with visual impairment during the demos of these assistive aids

EMC India Center of Excellence (CoE) recently concluded an awareness workshop for its employees on assistive technologies for visually impaired individuals at its Bangalore campus.
The program targeted to create awareness and sensitize managers, hiring leads, leadership and other teams on visual impairment and how assistive technologies can help a person with visual impairment function successfully at work.

Blind student of IIM-A says sight loss no handicap

Having faced the tragedy of losing vision during childhood, 23-year-old Karan Singhaniya from this small town in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, realized that vision impairment has less to do with the eyes and more to do with the brain and thoughts. He is the first 100% visually impaired student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

Writer failed me in Zilla Parishad exam: Visually impaired girl to HC

A visually challenged girl has knocked at the doors of the Bombay high court alleging that she was not provided with a proper writer for the written examination to fill up vacant posts in the Zilla Parishad in the Thane district.

Prachi Shrisikar, who has lost 80 per cent of her vision, had written a letter to the HC, which was converted into a suo motu (on its own) writ petition by chief justice Mohit Shah.

During the hearing on Thursday, a division bench of the chief justice and justice MS Sanklecha sought a response from the Thane Zilla Parishad by October 9.

Visually-impaired can’t see coins !

With the visually impaired in the state having a hard time distinguishing the recently issued  Re 1, Re 2, Re 5 and 50 paise  coins, the Kerala chapter of  Daisy Forum of India, an NGO involved in production of books and reading material in blind accessible format, has submitted a memorandum to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to issue Braille-friendly notes and coins.

The NGO complains the visually impaired, who want to lead independent lives, are forced to depend on others to tell the coins apart.

Ideas for Orissa

We at Score Foundation are on the verge of launching Eyeway, the single stop knowledge resource on life with blindness in the State of Orissa.
Towards this end, we have conducted 4 two day workshops at Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Chandbani and Sambalpur. An average of 20 blind boys and girls attended these workshops where in we were focusing on goal setting, communication skills and the legal provisions.

These workshops were major eye openers for us. We were amazed at the extreme low levels of knowledge amongst the participants.

Smartphones help the visually impaired navigate their daily lives

Modern smartphones, such as the iPhone and Android devices, have made it easy for the visually impaired to interact with the world and have made their daily lives easier and more independent. Early on in the smartphone world, devices didn’t have much in the way of features that helped the visually impaired. Early on the iPhone only allowed users to enlarge the text, offering no help to those who were unable to see.

‘Experience to improve mental abilities of visually-challenged’

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and Microsoft India Development Centre (MSIDC) on Friday jointly launched a new initiative to support the visually challenged here in Vijayawada on Friday. The initiative is a Mobility and Sensory Stimulation Park at LVPEI’s Kode Venkatadri Chowdary Campus in Tadigadapa. A helpline centre at Hyderabad was remotely launched from Vijayawada on Friday.

A new television series is trying to change society’s attitude towards the visually impaired.

"My family members don’t realise what I am doing on my own without their help. They only see what I don’t or cannot. This upsets me no end.” I remember these words by a senior research scholar I knew. He was visually impaired.
