AURANGABAD: More than three million await corneal transplantation in India alone. With the demand outstripping the supply across the country, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has intensified its eye donation campaign. Under the ongoing National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB), the ophthalmology department has organised various educational and awareness events. These will go on till September 8.

Though she is sight impaired, she has been shaping the future of many students. Meet Manjari Shukla, a teacher at a government blind school on Mohan road. Due to illness, she started losing her eye-sight during childhood. After passing class XII, Shukla lost vision completely.

Chennai: Over 20 million people lose their eyesight due to various problems in India; of this, corneal blindness accounts for two million.

“If you take corneal blindness, 50 per cent of two million are children below the age of 15,” informs Dr. Mohan Rajan of Rajan Eye Care Hospital.

In order to create awareness among people, eye donation fort­nig­ht is observed fr­om August 25 and Se­ptember 8 every year.

It has been 16 years since India’s Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) gained recognition from the International Braille Chess Association. During this period, players have missed out on winning individual medals although the country’s chess players have gone from strength to strength. However, the dry phase has finally ended with 19-year-old Darpan Inani bagging the bronze medal at the International Braille Chess Championship in Belgrade on Saturday.

ASB - T20 State level Tournament for the Blind is Kick started

Ramanagara: After several days of anticipation ASB Cup State level Cricket tournament for the Blind was kick started here at District stadium Ramanagara.

The tournament, modeled on the regular T-20 format, is sponsored by the ASB, builders and developers (our title-principal sponsor) and the tournament will have 15 matches including semifinals and Finals. The 3 day tournament will have 12 teams from across the state. These teams are divided in 4 groups and will play against each other and fight for a berth in the two semi-finals and final.

New toy helps blind students feel the words

AHMEDABAD: While braille helps blind people read, educators have been unendingly tested by the challenge to make their students visualize the concepts they are learning. A toy that a postgraduate student of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has collaborated in developing may well turn out to be the "holy braille" of education for blind people, helping them feel the world around them.

Sabriye Tenberken, a German who became visually-impaired at the age of 12, encountered this in Tibet. She visited the country in 1997 for an academic project.

VJTI students develop navigation device for visually impaired

Four final year B.Tech students of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) at Matunga have developed a portable device that will enable the visually impaired to navigate without any other assistance. The students claim that the device would offer unprecedented autonomy for the visually impaired.

The device will be unveiled on Wednesday at a school for the blind and will be exhibited during the annual technological festival of the institute, Technovanza, in December.

Ravenshaw University installs software for visually-impaired students

CUTTACK: Ravenshaw University has installed a special software for visually-impaired students. This software, JAWS, reads out whatever is typed on the computer. The eight computers with this software have been kept at a special section in the Kanika library.

A scanner connected to these computers was also installed. It can read out the book placed inside it.
