A Hybrid Braille Font Lets Visually Impaired Kids Read Any Book

To make kids living with visual impairments able to share the same experiences as their friends and peers, a new series of children's books was created. The Storybook For All Eyes each feature a custom-designed font that incorporates both braille and english letters into a single typeface so they can be shared and enjoyed by all.

More than three million people are waiting for corneal transplants in India, while only about 50,000 corneal donations are made in the country, said K. Bhujang Shetty, chairperson of Narayana Nethralaya.

The hospital has intensified its eye donation campaign in the State to create awareness and bridge the gap between demand and supply of corneas in the country.

Using Beijing's Tactile Paving Is "Practically Suicide"

Beijing has the longest tactile paving for the vision impaired among all the cities in the world. In theory, they are a great idea to facilitate mobility for the vision impaired, but in reality few use it because as one vision impaired person in Beijing said, "It is practically suicide to use them."

Tactile paving is made of colorful raised tiles, usually yellow, that allow vision impaired people to navigate their way.

Crowdsourcing app MySmartEye helps visually-impaired 'see'

Summary: The visually-impaired can find out what's in front of them by snapping a picture, where a global network of volunteers can then key in their comments, which are read out over the blind user's smartphone.

SINGAPORE--Local telco StarHub has launched a crowdsourcing mobile app called MySmartEye to help the blind worldwide "see". The application connects the visually-impaired with a global network of volunteers who help describe the contents of the pictures they take.

AOF-IAB All India Dance Competition for the Blind

Indian Association for the Blind (IAB) is holding an All India Dance Competition for the visually challenged in association with Amway Opportunity Foundation on Saturday, 30th November, 2013 in Madurai. 

This dance property was conceptualized by Amway Opportunity Foundation in year 2010 and every year this event is organized jointly by AOF and its project partner. This year IAB is partnering with AOF for this event, which is going to be organized in South for the first time.

Nearly half the world’s blind are in India. Of the 15 million blind in India, 25% are corneal blind and again of this 60% are children below the age of 12 years. These children have a long dark life ahead of them, but we can give them light through sight by some dedicated effort. Drushti Daan, a registered voluntary society has been working in the realm of Eye Donation since the last decade in Odisha. Every visually challenged has a RIGHT TO SIGHT and see this beautiful world. Drusthi Daan has collected nearly 2000 corneas till date.

Banglabraille brightens prospects for blind students

A social networking group has stepped forward to help visually impaired students in Bangladesh through its unique efforts.

When school students in Bangladesh returned to their classes in January, those who are blind or visually impaired were left at a considerable disadvantage. Textbooks in Braille were months late in coming, leaving them without resources for their studies.

Buying groceries is not an easy task when you have trouble seeing.

But for people like Liat Negris, life is about to become a lot easier. By wearing the OrCam, Negrin can point to what she wants to read and the device will do it for her.

She said: “It gives me independence, you know, I can do anything by myself. I don’t need favours, I don’t need to be escorted anywhere, I can go to new places without memorising again and again the way”.

300 disabled youth audition for NGO Blind Dreams Indiyaah Talent Hunt in Mumbai

In a touching, heart-rending and soul-stirring event, more than 300 blind and differently enabled youth from all over Maharashtra participated in the western zone round of auditions for the Blind Dreams’ Indiyaah Talent Hunt for the disabled or differently enabled. The auditions were held at the Kamla Mehta School for the Blind at Dadar in Central Mumbai. Most participants came from far off towns and villages in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Four visually-impaired UPSC candidates may get civil service jobs

Five years ago, Shivam Kumar had cleared the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) examination, but he was not appointed to the civil services. Now, he stands a chance to join the coveted service as the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has directed the UPSC to give appointment letters to four visually-impaired candidates by October this year since they had secured more marks than some general category candidates who cleared the same examinations.

NAGPUR: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) could not have got a better way to begin the 'eye donation fortnight' than getting someone pledging eye donation on the very first day. Pooja Saluja, 32, of Jaripatka and a graphic designer running her business, has decided to pledge eye donation with GMCH on the first day of the fortnight on Sunday.

"I had been thinking about organ donation. But recent deliberations with our religious Guru of Radhaswami Pant and recent campaign of Times of India made my determination more strong," she told TOI.

England's secret weapon for Ashes success was 'visually impaired' Goalball sport

England's cricketers have revealed that they had used Goalball, which is a sport devised for the visually impaired, during practice sessions as one of the secret weapons in their successful battle against Australia in the Ashes.

According to the Mirror, English cricketers have used Goalball equipment like black-out goggles, which extinguish every scrap of light, and have laid themselves down in front a ball hurled at 60 mph while wearing those goggles, during training and warm-ups to promote trust and togetherness.
