It has been four months since she went to school. Every time the 11-year-old turns up at her municipal school in Nehru Park, the principal sends her back, saying the school doesn't have special educators to teach her. The 11-year-old is a challenged child.

AURANGABAD: More than three million await corneal transplantation in India alone. With the demand outstripping the supply across the country, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has intensified its eye donation campaign. Under the ongoing National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB), the ophthalmology department has organised various educational and awareness events. These will go on till September 8.

Ramanagara: After several days of anticipation ASB Cup State level Cricket tournament for the Blind was kick started here at District stadium Ramanagara.

The tournament, modeled on the regular T-20 format, is sponsored by the ASB, builders and developers (our title-principal sponsor) and the tournament will have 15 matches including semifinals and Finals. The 3 day tournament will have 12 teams from across the state. These teams are divided in 4 groups and will play against each other and fight for a berth in the two semi-finals and final.

Imagine a place where blindness is considered a punishment for the sins committed in your previous birth and the visually-impaired live as outcasts! Sabriye Tenberken, a German who became visually-impaired at the age of 12, encountered this in Tibet. She visited the country in 1997 for an academic project.

Four final year B.Tech students of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) at Matunga have developed a portable device that will enable the visually impaired to navigate without any other assistance. The students claim that the device would offer unprecedented autonomy for the visually impaired.

The device will be unveiled on Wednesday at a school for the blind and will be exhibited during the annual technological festival of the institute, Technovanza, in December.

CUTTACK: Ravenshaw University has installed a special software for visually-impaired students. This software, JAWS, reads out whatever is typed on the computer. The eight computers with this software have been kept at a special section in the Kanika library.

A scanner connected to these computers was also installed. It can read out the book placed inside it.
