Kolkata stages chess championship for the blind
A chess championship for the blind started off here Friday, proving that the visually impaired are just as talented as the privileged and promising exciting close finishes and hitherto unseen talent.
In its second edition, the All Bengal Chess Competition for the Blind, has drawn skilled chess players from several districts of the state to prove their mettle.
HC lifts stay on KPSC technical, non-technical appointments
The High Court on Friday vacated the stay on appointments to 20 KPSC technical and non-technical posts, the notification for which was issued by the KPSC on January 18, 2012.
A division Bench of Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice A S Bopanna passed the order on a public interest petition filed by the National Federation for the Blind which contended that such persons were not given the benefit of reservation.
The Bench directed the authorities to continue the selection process by including reservation for the visually impaired.

Make panel to ensure quota for the blind
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the state government to constitute a panel for monitoring and ensuring that 1% quota as provided by the rules for the visually disabled is fulfilled within six months. The court has sought an action-taken report after six months.

Differently abled fight it out ably at sports meet
Fun and frolic marked the district-level sports meet for differently abled persons held at Anna Stadium here on Thursday.
Nearly 250 of them took part in the meet organised by the Tiruchi-unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, who inaugurated the competition, said that such meets provided a platform for differently abled to showcase their skills. Taking part in sporting activities will help in overcoming stress, she said.
Blind Ph.D holder wants to help farmers
He talks passionately about the rights of farmers on their produce, and wants to educate them on bio-privacy. The fact that he is visually impaired, he says, has never deterred him from completing his research on intellectual property, traditional knowledge and bio-diversity.
On Thursday, 35-year-old S. Elumalai was awarded a Ph.D at the seventh convocation ceremony of Dr. Ambedkar Law University.
A consistent gold medallist in various institutions, including Madras Law College, Elumalai hails from a village near Tiruvannamalai.
No room for disabled in Bhopal schools
Parents of three specially-abled children have made all efforts to seek admission in local schools but to no avail.
Now, the parents are demanding justice for their children (Right to study). “I approached Green Field School, Anand Vihar School and Aurobindo School (in Tulsi Nagar and Shivaji Nagar locality). The school management denied admission to my visually impaired daughter,” said Rashmi Kushwah, mother of 5-year-old Sargam.

New device for blind kids to learn Braille
Imagine a young blind child, who is too weak to hold a stylus in his hand, to punch holes on a sheet while training how to write in the Braille script.
After impressing holes on the sheet from right to left, the child has to know the pattern of reading it from left to right after flipping the sheet over.
A printing press for the blind
Here’s some relief for blind students in Bangalore, who have to run pillar to post looking for textbooks. Snehadeep Trust for the Blind dedicated a Braille printing press here recently for the blind in order to fill the wide deficit of Braille literature available for the visually impaired students in the city.
The printing press was inaugurated by Malay Chatterjee, chairman and managing director of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL), and BBMP councillor Rajendra on the premises of the organisation in Cox Town.
Trade fair for disabled to be held in Delhi
A four-day trade fair aimed at creating awareness about technical advancements in aid, assistive and rehabilitative devices for the people with disabilities will be organised here from Thursday, an official said.
"We are organising Swavlamban, a national fair on aid and assistive devices for people with disabilities, at Pragati Maidan July 25-28," said Stuti Kacker, secretary in the department of disability affairs, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Rwanda: Visually-Impaired Persons Demand Inclusion in Development Projects
People living with visual impairment can be assisted to achieve self-reliance instead of living dependent lives, the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) has said.
"There is wrong society's perception that the blind do not deserve opportunities or assistance offered to other people engaged in income generating projects," said Rachel Musabyimana, RUB communication and advocacy officer.
Visually-challenged students have a reason to cheer
Two new modern Braille printing units have reached the press of the Red Cross School for the Blind in Berhampur, the only such press in Odisha.
It is hoped that the new printing units would meet the textbook needs of the visually impaired schoolchildren of the State. The new ‘Interprint 55 high speed embossers’ have been imported from Belgium as they are not produced in India. Manager of the Prakash Narayan Rath says the units cost Rs.1.70 crore.
