Poorvanchal gets first talking ATM

The district got its first talking ATM machine designed specially to facilitate its visually challenged customers. This is also the first talking ATM in Poorvanchal. The ATM machine, installed by the KashiGomtiSanyuktaGrameen Bank (KGSGB) at its Akatha branch was inaugurated by the managing director, Union Bank of India (UBI) LalitSinha. UBI, the first in the banking sector to give India's first talking ATM in Ahmedabad, Gujarat has provided the technological support to KGSGB in the installation of the machine.

Device that can help blind 'see' through ears

How well can you 'see' with your ears? Scientists claim to have developed a "revolutionary" new device that helps blind people 'see' by using sounds to build an image in their minds of the things around them.

The new sensory substitution device 'vOICe' trains the brain to turn sounds into images and could be used as an alternative to invasive treatment for blind and partially-sighted people, researchers said. 

Job Oriented Call Centre Employability Training

In collaboration with RuralShores and Vodafone,  EnAble India is conducting a Job oriented training program  for visually impaired. Under which, the candidates will be trained on some key skills like problem solving, analytical thinking, quality orientation, computers and English communication etc. which will not only help them in securing a job but also help the candidate to lead a better quality life. After the training, selected candidates will be placed in Vodafone call centre. The job involves calling customers and pitching sales.

For the disabled, footpaths are a nightmare

If you are able to walk and see and are a determined pedestrian, Chennai’s apology for footpaths might still be negotiable. However, for those with disabilities, footpaths such as these are best avoided.
“For a disabled person, using the pavements in Chennai is a nightmarish experience,” says Rajiv Ranjan, member, Disability Rights Alliance (DRA).

Visually-impaired R. Raja escaped death two months ago. On his way to university, the research scholar in Tamil Literature stumbled upon a political party’s hoarding on a footpath near Kannagi statue near Marina beach.

“I did not know there was a hoarding on the footpath. So I fell on the road. A bus came to a screeching halt a few inches beside me,” said Mr. Raja.

Impairment no impediment for this teenager

Audio-graphs that can represent actual data-graphs are one of the many technological wonders that a group of blind students learnt about from a Delhi-based teenager this weekend. On his way to Stanford University to pursue a bachelor's degree in computer science, 18-year-old visually impaired Kartik Sawhney inspired at least 20 blind students to pursue maths and science, in a two-day workshop that ended Saturday.

Affirming the right to read

Despite our otherwise imperfect record in recognising the rights of people with disabilities, it is a matter of some pride that India’s copyright law anticipates the Marrakesh Treaty of the World Intellectual Property Organisation that has now legalised the right to read for an estimated 314 million blind and print disabled. The most notable common provision in the new treaty and India’s copyright law is the waiver of prior approval from authors and publishers for the reproduction and distribution of works into any alternative format, precluding commercial gain.

World's first engineering college for blind soon

The students are waiting and the software and syllabus is ready for the world's first engineering college for the visually impaired, but a search for suitable land to set up the multi-crore campus that could empower hundreds of special children is where the project is stuck. 

An ambitious blueprint to set up an engineering college by the Devnar Foundation, with help from professors of BITS Pilani, along with 20 different digital and Braille software and initial funding arrangement is however ready. 

Visually impaired students will get laptops in 4yr programme

The Delhi University today informed the High Court that all the visually impaired students will be given laptops fitted with Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) software. 

The university told the court that this was being done so that the students do not suffer in the four-year undergraduate programme, being implemented from July 24.
