The past few years have seen several attempts to bring sight to the blind by fitting them with artificial retinas. These implanted devices turn incoming light into electrical signals and pass those signals to nerves that run to the brain’s optical cortex. The result is an image which, though low-resolution and monochrome, is better than no image at all.
The proposed FYUP (Four Year Undergraduate Program) by the Delhi University mandates that every student study foundation course each in basic Mathematics and Science in the first year. This is a positive step forward, since I believe the study of Mathematics and Science has a great impact on the way one processes knowledge and perceives the world around.
However, in the present context, making the study of these two subjects compulsory is certain to exclude most blind students. Majority of schools in India do not offer the subjects to visually impaired students beyond Class VIII.

Saksham Daksh School realized that children with multiple disability or children with blindness living in Noida were not able to take any benefits of these centres. During their interactions with special educators, they also realized that some children with blindness were already enrolled in the main stream schools but did not have access to any support services due to which they were facing a lot of difficulty and not able to get quality education in Noida region.
A taxi driver was arrested in Puri on Saturday for allegedly raping and murdering a visually impaired minor girl, police said.
Banamali Barik, 35, who was arrested, is a drug edict and has a criminal record. He was a frequent visitor to the victim's house. He has confessed to the crime, District Superintendent of Police Anup Sahu told IANS.

A new bionic eye being developed at Monash University will help thousand of blind people to see light and shapes for the first time.
World-first wireless technology and a computer processor, implanted in the brain, helps the blind to determine shapes through a series of mapping dots after they wear a pair of sunglasses, News.com.au reported.
The gadget takes information from a glasses-mounted camera and sends it, via a wireless transmitter, to the brain.
This vision takes the form of basic shapes made of light - similar to looking at a line of stars.
People find it difficult to drive on city roads with their eyes wide open. But, 154 visually-impaired men and women have registered to take part in a rally to be held in the city on Sunday. The number is even likely to increase.
The rally titled FOReSIGHT 2013, is being jointly organised by the Association for the Blind, Bangalore Knights Round Table 174 and others.
Visual impairment has a very debilitating effect on the family and the economic condition of those suffering from it, President Pranab Mukherjee today said and called for use of latest technology to combat it.
He also said that the treatment should be made affordable for all while speaking after inauguration of an eye hospital started by the Swami Swaroopanand Charitable Trust in Narsinghpur district here.
Public places should be designed keeping in mind the convenience of those suffering from any impairment, the President said.
India will soon have separate guidelines for eye donations and transplantation. The Union health ministry, in its bid to augment eye donations in the country, has set up a committee, headed by the chief of R P Eye Centre at AIIMS, Dr R V Azad, to frame new rules which will separate eye retrieval and transplant from organ donations.
