How an engineer created a voice command app to become more independent.

When I was about 30 years old, I started having problems with my vision. I was born perfectly sighted, but over the course of my adulthood, my vision deteriorated to the point where I couldn’t read anything. My family and friends, of course, wanted to help me with my everyday tasks — and for a while, they had to do that. But I wanted to gain my independence back and feel more confident in my abilities. As a computer engineer, I felt like I could create a solution that could not only help me but help others in my situation.

Smart glasses donated to visually impaired

The initiative was a part of the 'Happy Eyes Programme' held under the 'Nanna Kannu' initiative of Sankara Eye Hospital.

Over 25 people with vision impairment were provided AI-powered smart glasses free of cost at Sankara Eye Hospital on Saturday.

Learning to accept and seek solutions

Twenty-two-year-old Ritu L lives in Bangalore, Karnataka. At the age of two, she started losing her eyesight due to a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy. Her parents still put her in a mainstream school, so she wouldn’t feel isolated or left out. However, in Class 7, Ritu faced another challenge when she underwent cataract surgery for one eye. This further deteriorated her vision.
Following this, she was heavily dependent on her classmates and mother to help her study, as she could not read and write on her own. She engaged the services of a scribe to write her examinations.

To his young audience, George tells, ‘Every problem has a solution, if you are patient and willing to solve it. My attitude is my strength.’
