Visually impaired run out of scribes

Visually impaired students appearing for tests like the computer certificate, bank probationary officers exam, teacher eligibility test (TET) or clerical tests are facing a major shortage of scribes.

While the need for scribes ranges from between 30 to 300 a month, unfortunately there are not many available. As the eligibility criteria is stringent, most students find it difficult to find a scribe.

Even as the nation writhes in agony over the Bangalore school rape incident, another shocking case of brutality against children has to come light, this time from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
A teacher of a residential school for visually impaired children in the city was caught on camera brutally canning young children. The teacher is also blind.

A journalism course for the visually-impaired students

The Times Foundation, in collaboration with JSS Mahavidyapeetha, has introduced a mass communication and journalism course for visually-impaired students at JSS Polytechnic For The Differently Abled.

The course, perhaps the first of its kind in India, aims at moulding students into radio/video jockeys (RJs/VJs), anchors, technical writers and digital journalists. The focus is on voice-based journalism as the course is exclusively for visually challenged students.

12 blind girl students who passed class 7, now have no school to go

Twelve blind class 7 girl students, who passed out from Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind, will not be able to pursue further studies this year. This Marathi medium school has classes only up to class 7.

And for further studies students from this school go to the nearby Saraswati High School at Naigaon (Dadar) where they are provided separate resource teachers along with regular teachers. This year however, Saraswati HS is not enrolling blind students in class 8 as it does not have resource teachers as well as regular teachers to engage this class.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Centre and others on a PIL seeking quashing of an examination notice of UPSC for the upcoming Civil Services Examination on the ground of non-compliance of 1% quota for visually impaired applicants.
The bench headed by Chief Justice G Rohini also sought responses within four weeks from the Union Public Service Commission and Department of Perso nnel and Training on the petition filed by NGO Sambhavana, which works for disabled persons.
