Not allowing blindness to come in the way

Twenty-six-year-old Sumitra S lives in Bangalore, Karnataka. When she was 3, she lost her eyesight after developing a high fever. Her parents consulted several doctors, but her vision could not be restored at the time.
Sumitra was sent to a mainstream school irrespective of the sight loss. She sat in the classroom studying alongside other kids. Her teachers and parents read out notes and books to Sumitra, so she could keep up. She had to take help from a scribe to write her exams.

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu graced and addressed the golden jubilee celebration of the National Federation of the Blind today (August 3, 2023) in New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that providing a dignified life to the persons with disabilities is the responsibility of the entire society. We have to ensure that they get proper education, employment opportunities, accessible public places, and a safer and better life.

Odisha Got Its first Higher Education School For Visually-Impaired Students

In a first, Odisha's Bhima Bhoi school for the blind got upgraded with Vocational and Higher Secondary School. Initially, 24 visually-challenged students are enrolled in Plus II first-year in the school. Students from across the State can take admission and study +2 in Science, Arts and IT which will also have hostel facilities
A 50-bed hostel building for both boys and girls will also be constructed on its premises soon.

Twenty-two-year-old Kamlesh Kumar Gupta was born in a small village of Sonbhadra district in Uttar Pradesh. He was born with a vision impairment and his parents took him to see several doctors until at the age of 14 they were told that the sight loss was irreversible.

Students’ future at stake

Nineteen-year-old Piyush Kaushik lives in Delhi. When he was five, he lost his eyesight, triggered by a sudden illness. Coming from an affluent family, Piyush had better access to resources. He studied with support and learned to read and write using computer with screen reading software.
