Visually impaired students find it tough to get writers

Visually impaired students have a tough time finding an efficient examination writer. This was highlighted by a recent instance of a Class IX state board student in Nerul. As the school semester exams were scheduled from Monday, the student needed an exam writer.

As the exams were scheduled for all the students, the search for writers had to be done through NGOs, social networking sites and smses.

Messages seeking help for the child were posted on networking sites and by Friday evening, the student was informed that they had found a writer.

BPO for visually-challenged comes up in Madurai

The Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF), in partnership with the Indian Association of the Blind (IAB), has set up a business process outsourcing (BPO) unit exclusively for the visually-challenged.

The BPO, located on the IAB campus in Madurai was inaugurated by Justice D Stanley David and Sujoy Bose, associate vice president (South), Amway India & Amway Opportunity Foundation.

Blind student of IIM-A says sight loss no handicap

Having faced the tragedy of losing vision during childhood, 23-year-old Karan Singhaniya from this small town in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, realized that vision impairment has less to do with the eyes and more to do with the brain and thoughts. He is the first 100% visually impaired student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

Writer failed me in Zilla Parishad exam: Visually impaired girl to HC

A visually challenged girl has knocked at the doors of the Bombay high court alleging that she was not provided with a proper writer for the written examination to fill up vacant posts in the Zilla Parishad in the Thane district.

Prachi Shrisikar, who has lost 80 per cent of her vision, had written a letter to the HC, which was converted into a suo motu (on its own) writ petition by chief justice Mohit Shah.

During the hearing on Thursday, a division bench of the chief justice and justice MS Sanklecha sought a response from the Thane Zilla Parishad by October 9.

Visually impaired student impresses experts at Oxford

While doing her PhD at UoP, she represents city and is one of the three participants from India at the global conference.

 
Early this month, Kalyanlakshmi Chitta (29), a visually impaired research associate and PhD student at the economics department of the University of Pune, did the city proud. She representing Pune at the third global conference on ‘The Value of Work’ organised at Mansfield College of the University of Oxford.

Kalyanlakshmi’s research paper was one of the three selected from India for the conference, held between September 1 and 3.

Visually impaired teachers support protest in Chennai

Members of the Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts Blind Teachers Association and Tamil Nadu Self-Confident Blind Services Society (TNSCBSS) staged a demonstration in front of the collectorate here on Monday. They expressed solidarity with the members of the Blind Students and Graduate Association, who were fasting in Chennai since September 16, over a host of demands.

Talks with minister not fruitful

It’s about a week now. A group of visually-challenged graduates in the city has been on indefinite fast demanding employment in government sectors for qualified persons in their community.

When social welfare minister B. Valarmathi, who called on them on Sunday, said she would need some more time to decide on their placements, the protestors did not budge and continued their fast.
