JAWS Commands

JAWS is one of the most commonly used screen reader programs. It reads all text within the Windows system (application menus, document text and help screens etc.) and on websites also. When using JAWS, you need to be able to navigate using key strokes in order to get content of the screen.

Here is a list of JAWS commands for Desktop computers which facilitate reading generic text.

This section describes the keyboard layout for a standard Windows-compatible keyboard. If you are using a different type of keyboard, your layout may be different.

Window keystrokes

This is a tutorial explaining keyboard shortcuts (as located on a keyboard) for various tasks such as starting windows, reading text etc. These keystrokes might be useful for blind people using computers with JAWS, and also for friends/family of blind people who can guide them.

• The menu commands and other features explained here are as found in Excel 9.0 of Microsoft Office 2000.

• The screen reader keystrokes have been prefixed with ‘Screen reader command’ to distinguish them from the application keystrokes.

Keeping in view the needs of visually impaired users, care has been taken to adopt a keyboard approach to all tasks although the mouse options have also been mentioned.

The tutorial has been divided into two parts - a basic introduction (given below) and advanced formatting, which will be unveiled in the time to come.
