A special educator at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School at Nambiyur here has received the “Best Teacher Award 2020” from the State Government for his service towards the differently abled students.
J. Manjunathan, serving in the school since 2009, is one among the three teachers in the State who received the award from the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on the occasion of International Day of Disabled Persons on December 21 in Chennai.

At a mere age of 16, T Ravi Kiran, a young genius from Sonala village in Adilabad district, has invented a device called 'Blind Eye', which acts as an artificial eye for the visually-impaired. Ravi's innovation, on which he has been working for the last three years and one that also won him accolades across the country, is capable of three things - read, recognise and navigate.
CHENNAI: Exposure to light, translation of visual information into electric information, and the progression of a mere image into a cohesive visual map – the layered processes that enable one’s sense of sight has been a matter of important discussion; especially now, amid the pandemic, where spiking virtual interactions and increased screen time have become the new normal.

Calling the push towards ‘Accessible India’ a mere superficial attempt to make life better for the disabled citizens, Rinku Malik, 31, a music teacher from city, says that there needs to be a deeper understanding of what independence and self-reliance means for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
As per the AISHE report of 2018-19, a total of 85,877 PwD (Persons with Disabilities) students are enrolled in higher education in India. To support and encourage these students to pursue their education, different government departments run several scholarship schemes. These schemes range from merit-based programmes to means-based and merit-cum-means based programmes.
