D Akshay Kumar started losing his eyesight at the age of 7 and by the time he was in class 6, he lost it completely. It has been an uphill task since, and on Monday, the student of DAV Senior Secondary School, Mogappair, was a proud lad when he scored 92% in commerce of the class 12 CBSE exam.

Contrary to the tall claims made by the government that everything is being done to ensure specially abled community exercise its rights without any hurdles, the highly qualified but visually-impaired people are being discriminated against and are told, directly or obliquely, that they are useless for the society.

Visually impaired girl tops MP board exams

Beating all odds, a visually impaired girl, Shrishti Tiwari, from Damoh town has topped the Madhya Pradesh Higher Secondary examination in Arts stream.

The results were declared two days back by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education. For Shrishti, a student of JBP Government Higher Secondary School in Damoh, the achievement is special not only academically but also because of the fact that she is visually impaired since birth. She scored 481 out of 500 marks to emerge as the topper in Arts stream.

Delhi University colleges to have help desks for disabled students

NEW DELHI: With admissions under PWD (Persons with Disability) category being decentralized, DU's Equal Opportunity Cell — which facilitated admissions into this category till last year — is working on a system that will make the process easier for applicants. A soon-to-be-constituted central enabling committee will serve as a monitoring body and also issue a special set of guidelines for colleges.

Disabled teachers, students move HC against 4-year degree

NEW DELHI: An organization of disabled teachers and students moved Delhi high court challenging Delhi University's decision to go ahead with its controversial four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).  

The organization, Sambhavana, has filed a PIL in HC seeking a stay on the implementation of the four-year degree programme. The PIL argues that the present design of FYUP is discriminatory as it fails to take into consideration the aspirations and specific needs of students with blindness and other "print-disabilities".

Odisha Govt to continue free uniform scheme for disabled students

Report by India Education bureau, Bhubaneswar:  The state government on Saturday decided to continue the provision of free uniforms to students with disability studying in special schools and initiate steps for providing travel concessions to Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the urban areas.
