M. Karpagam, a visually impaired lawyer practising at the Madras High Court, has been selected for this year’s NCPEDP-Mphasis Javed Abidi Universal Design Award in the public policy and advocacy category.

She is the first visually impaired woman advocate who is actively practising, including arguing her cases, in the High Court, she says. Her journey has been fraught with challenges.

Delhi-based Manovikas Charitable Society initiates virtual learning for people with disabilities

To help the kids and adults with disabilities and their parents cope up with the Covid-19 pandemic, Delhi-based Manovikas Charitable Society –founded in 1997 – initiated virtual programmes – Mashvara and Manbhavan. Mashvara is a live consultation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Manbhavan tries to engage these kids in cultural and craft activities.

Supplementary board exams begin

The supplementary board examinations for Classes 12 and 10 began across Tamil Nadu on Monday with the language paper.

Following the cancellation of the SSLC examination, which was to have been held in March, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Class 10 students who had registered themselves for the examination through schools were declared promoted by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

They were given mark-sheets based on their half-yearly and quarterly examinations.

At a time when Tamil Nadu is singling out children with disabilities by forcing them to sit for board exams despite the pandemic, comes this positive step towards inclusive education thanks to the efforts of State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro.

All schools in Nagaland, recognised and registered by the state government will henceforth provide inclusive education to children with disabilities.
