Forty-year-old Anupama (name changed) was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition. Ten years back when Anupama worked as a software developer in Uttar Pradesh, she moved around independently and managed all her work without any assistance. But it was around that time only when she experienced first signs of vision loss.

Stories from Thumbi, a bilingual children’s magazine, are now available in braille, and will be distributed at 60 schools for the visually-impaired in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka

Can visually-impaired children experience the vibrant world of picture books? Nearly ten years ago, when he was yet to start Thumbi, a bilingual, monthly children’s magazine, Sivaraj dwelled on this thought during a conversation with children’s author, the late Vaandu Mama.

AICB to open its South Indian headquarters in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 2022……All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) is a body of blind persons working for and with the blind community to open its South Indian headquarters at Hyderabad. AICB, the 42 years old body is made up of various state level associations / organizations, starting from the grass root level. It has 24 affiliates across the country.

A small new office is a rented office in Babukhan Estate, Basheerbagh. It will be formally inaugurated on 19th March Saturday.

Inculcating reading as habit.
The power of knowledge is well known to everyone and knowledge comes from books.
We understand the difficulties faced by print disabled (blind, low vision, aged people etc) in getting a book for reading in an accessible format.
The add-on to this problem is the fact that many people don't have the right tools  for the reading and may face difficulty for the resources that provide such accessible books.

Taking a Stand

Many blind and visually impaired people in the country depend on government welfare schemes and provisions to manage their lives. With Covid-19, livelihood options shrunk for a majority of the blind population, working in the informal sector as hawkers or daily wagers. Many of them now completely rely on the government social security schemes for their sustenance.

Reading Room For Visually Impaired: Rama Devi Women’s University Receives Funds From Alumni

Bhubaneswar: Mo College Abhijan received a contribution of rupees one lakh for the construction of an IT aided reading room for visually impaired students at Ramadevi Women’s University Bhubaneswar.

The contribution was made by Shyamali Mohapatra (current Registrar of the varsity) who handed over the cheque to the Chairperson Akash Dasnayak at the Mo College Abhijan office on behalf of her mother Binodini Mohapatra.

A New Way Forward

22-year-old Ashwin, a resident of Chikmagalur in Karnataka was diagnosed with retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition at an early age. But his vision remained intact till he completed his Civil Engineering.
