The lockdown has caused a shortage of scribes and audio recordings of study material, leaving many visually challenged students in Tiruchi, especially those attempting competitive exams, in the lurch.

The shift to online classes and widespread closure of college campuses have together created a tough situation for visually challenged aspirants to government and banking exams.

Scientists develop durable Braille maps using digital embossing technology

Scientists from National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) under the Department of Science & Technology have developed user-friendly long lasting durable Braille maps using advanced technology for visually challenged students in the country.

The digital embossing technology is a technology which eliminates the need for printing plates, moulds, chemicals, and solvents, emitting no pollutants or waste and reduces overall energy usage, said a statement from the DST here.

ITANAGAR, 5 Jan: The Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired in Chimpu celebrated World Braille Day with the visually impaired students of the school in a befitting manner on 4 January, followed by a sensitization programme on 5 January.
The school conducted its sensitization programme on Braille at Kendriya Vidyalaya -II, Itanagar for the students of classes XI and XII and made the students aware about Braille and other systems of special education meant for blind children for an inclusive society.

Bengaluru: Inspired by the idea that reading is a joy no one   should be deprived of, two youngsters have developed an  advanced Braille reader and navigation system.
Ruchitha   J and Rohit Natesh have created a prototype of the system  that consists of a box-like device generating real-time  Braille impressions. The user needs to click on the link  to an article or a book’s PDF and the text is converted into   Braille immediately. “The system is developed to have a  visually impaired-friendly interface with help of voice  instructions and a physical button setup,” Ruchitha said.

Eyeway Conversations with Moses Chowdari

Moses was born to a farmer family in a village in Andhra Pradesh and his vision impairment was detected when he was three months old. Growing up, his family wasn't sure what life had in store for him, assuming that blind people generally end up singers or musicians.

Raising hope

Mohammed Samir is a thirty-year-old resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He lost his eye sight in Class 8, after which he had to drop out of school. Coming from a small town and a family which was ignorant about opportunities for visually impaired children, Samir was forced to stay at home. Over the years he became increasingly dependent on people around him for basic activities of daily living. While his siblings moved around freely, getting proper education and employment, Samir struggled to even walk independently.

Braille-audio library project to be launched

Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty will inaugurate a Braille-audio library project at Government School for the Visually Impaired at Vazhuthacaud here on January 4, World Braille Day.

The day marks the 213th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the man behind the Braille system, a language system of reading and writing that is used by the visually impaired.

The Braille-audio library project at the school has been implemented under the supervision of the District Library Council with financial assistance from the Kerala State Library Council.
