Payal was working with the famous Oberoi group when she suffered from Meningitis at the age of 22. As a result she lost her eyesight, her hearing and her sense of smell and touch. She struggled for six years until she decided to turn things around for herself.

In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with Penny Melville-Brown, a British Royal Navy veteran, blind baker and winner of the Holman Prize. Penny served for 22 years in the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and Royal Navy, reaching the rank of commander. She was the first woman to hold the position of naval barrister. She was medically discharged from the Royal Navy in 1999 after her eyesight deteriorated and she created Disability Dynamics to help other people with disabilities to start a business. In 2009, she was awarded an OBE for her service to the disabled.

A visually disabled assistant professor at Punjabi University will function as coordinator of its newly established Centre for Disability Studies here. The announcement was made during a district-level programme on December 3, the World Disability Day.
Punjabi University said the basic aim of the centre was to cater to the specific educational needs of persons with disabilities, visual impairment, physical disability, hearing impairment and others.
RC Hubli Vidyanagar, RID 3170, inspired by the Project Drishti of Rotary Club of Madras East (RCME), RID 3232, launched the project ‘The Eye Story’, under which the club donated Smart Vision Glasses (SVS) designed by Smart Health Global, a Bengaluru-based IT company, to 16 visually-impaired students. “RCME helped us get in touch with the manufacturers and guided us through the process. Each device costs ₹25,000. VRL Logistics, Hubli, is partnering with us as part of their CSR venture,” says club president, Mahima Mohit.

Visually impaired Muskan Negi, who was earlier made a youth icon for elections by the Election Commission, has added another feather to her cap by winning the national-level “Golden Voice” title.
She won the title at a competition organised by the National Association for the Blind and Golden Shine Trust at Delhi.The Bollywood song “Namak ishq ka” sung by her in the final round bagged her the first prize.
On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, AirAsia India on Friday introduced an in-flight safety manual in braille in collaboration with the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Deafblind for the visually impaired passengers. Also, wheelchair assistance can now be pre-booked online on its website and app while getting a flight ticket, it said in a release.
Different types of wheelchair facilities are available to pre-book for persons with disabilities to access the ramp up to the ladder point or the aircraft door as well as to reach the cabin," it mentioned.
The International Day of Disabled Persons is celebrated on December 3 by United Nations to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for increasing dignity, the rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
The day is observed to underline the necessity of an inclusive culture that embraces persons with disabilities so that they can equally participate and contribute in the society
Every year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed on 3 December to promote the rights of people with disabilities and to raise awareness around their well-being. More than 1 billion people globally live with some form of disability and in spite of multiple measures to create awareness around their issues, they are often overlooked during times of emergency.
