QR codes and postal ballots: Voting made easy and inclusive

New Delhi: From postal ballots to QR code-enabled voter slips, the polling for the Delhi assembly elections Saturday had many firsts to its credit.

Delhi became the first state to experiment with postal ballots, so that voting more convenient for those with severe disabilities or above the age of 80 years.

Ameerullah Siddiqui, a voter from Okhla constituency, who has an orthopaedic impairment, said the ballot paper was sent to him about seven days in advance by the returning officer. He cast his vote and sent it back the same day.

First time in Nagaland, Blind Football demo/training camp on Feb 15 & 16

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 10 (MExN): For the first time in Nagaland, a Blind Football Demo/Training Camp will be conducted at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Ground, Riverbelt Colony, Dimapur on February 15 and 16. 

The Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF) and Prodigals' Home (PH), Dimapur are the organizing partners in collaboration with the Indian Blind Football Federation (IBFF), informed a press release from the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro.

13-year-old motivational speaker passes away

Thirteen-year-old visually impaired Prerna Sharma, who was a motivational speaker, died at the PGIMER here today. She was suffering from jaundice.

An inspiration for students of the City Beautiful, she was honoured with ‘Outstanding Creative Child with Disabilities’ by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Last year, Prerna Sharma, who was a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, was awarded a commendation certificate during the Republic Day function in Chandigarh.

Aurangabad man becomes first visually-impaired Indian to finish Ironman race

Defying all odds, a man from Aurangabad scripted history by becoming the first visually-impaired Indian to finish an Ironman triathlon in Dubai that involved swimming, bicycling and running.

Niket Dalal, 38, achieved the feat with the help of his sighted ally, Arham Shaikh, 27. The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.9km swim, 90km bicycle ride and 21.1km marathon that needs to be wrapped up under 8 hours without taking a break.

Statue of Unity to get divyang-friendly

The world’s tallest statue, ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat’s Narmada, which is visited daily by over 5,000 tourists, including elders and persons with disabilities (PwDs,) is all set for an upgrade to make it completely disabled-friendly.

The 182-metre-tall engineering marvel that was founded in a memorial tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat has recently got the tag of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s ‘8 Wonders of SCO’.  It is also said to be on the itinerary list of US President Donald Trump who is expected to visit India in the last week of February this year.

Pune: Second International Festival of Spiritual India concludes

The second edition of the International Festival of Spiritual India (IFSI) was held at the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (Yashada), Pune, from January 31 to February 2. “The festival aims to demystify the concept of spirituality and bring it to the grassroots level. It attempts to make attendees aware of what spirituality means and rediscover the deeply engraved spirituality already within them, with a union of the mind, body and spirit,” said Manjiri Prabhu, the organiser of the festival.

At the risk of sounding self-aggrandising, I’d say I’m a fairly empathetic person. Even when I wasn’t working in the disability domain, I was reasonably conscious of the different needs of people. Not like I changed anything around me or was overly vociferous on such subjects, but at least I was ‘aware’.

 

And that’s what I want to talk about. Awareness.

 

Online training in digital accessibility for visually impaired people opens doors to new job opportunities

This is important given the potential growth of job opportunities companies need people who can test websites and other digital mediums to ensure they are accessible for people with disabilities.
