Though the Cabinet has already approved the “Punjab Divyangjan Sashaktikaran Yojana (PDSY)” across the state in January this year, a majority of the government departments are not even aware of the scheme so far.

The scheme is meant to empower the differently abled persons in the state and the Cabinet has already allocated Rs 35 crore towards it for the financial year 2021.

LAHORE: A Lahore High Court division bench has dismissed an appeal filed by the Punjab government against a single bench’s decision whereby it was directed to consider a visually impaired candidate for an educator’s job who qualified for the post.

Muhammad Kamran Jamil, a visually impaired candidate, responding to an advertisement issued by the Punjab education department for the posts of Elementary School Educators (ESE), applied for the job and cleared the test conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS).

Making it ‘possible’ again

25-year-old Vinay P Nair is a person with vision impairment living in Kasaragod district of Kerala. He was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa when he was in school, after facing difficulty in reading the blackboard. But he managed to study with gradual sight loss, and completed his Bachelors in Commerce.
 
Like thousands of blind people, Vinay believed that it was impossible for him to pursue higher education or attain professional competency. He was unaware of trainings and assistive aids that could open up opportunities of employment for him.

For visually impaired Alli and her husband, paying their monthly house rent of ₹3,000 is the biggest challenge. Though she has an MA, B.Ed, she has been enrolled under the MGNREGA 100 days programme and is managing to survive.

The Tiruvallur district administration has now completed the construction of houses for Ms. Alli and 15 others like her near Uthukottai. The houses were sanctioned in 2016-17, but left incomplete due to various reasons.

G-Suite training begins for teachers

Thiruvananthapuram: State general education department has  started G-Suite online platform training for visually- challenged teachers in government and aided schools in the  state. As many as 456 teachers across the state are about  to benefit from the training programme organised by KITE.
KITE has already deployed free software-based screen reader applications like Orca in the school computers so that teachers with visual impairment would be able to overcome their limitations with the help of technology.
