As the world observed Disability Day, physically challenged persons in Jammu and Kashmir continue to be deprived of their rights.
The J&K Handicapped Welfare Association on Tuesday demanded that the Central government should implement the provisions of the Disability Act-2016 as the state had become a Union Territory now.
The association has also demanded self-help groups for economic uplift of the physically challenged persons who have faced discrimination in the erstwhile J&K state.
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was on Tuesday conferred with a national award for creating a free environment for persons with disabilities, officials said.

The Centre has awarded the Haryana Social Justice and Empowerment Department for having best accessibility features of its website designed for people with disabilities.

The 50-year-old Niranjan Behera from Paralakhemundi has become the inspiration for all differently-abled persons as he has been selected for the prestigious National Awards for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. He will be conferred with the award on the International Day of PWDs by President Ram Nath Kovind on December 3 in New Delhi.
Chandigarh, December 3
A three-week long self-defence training programme, ‘Swayam’, for visually-impaired girls culminated today with a demonstration by 13 girls of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26.
The training was conducted by the Chandigarh Police and was organised by the RCS Positive Abilities Rotaract Club and the institute.
Students trained were Vrinda, Savita, Rekha, Kashish, Usha, Manjit, Gaganjot, Kusum, Harleen, Garima, Rekha and Mansi. The training was conducted by Head Constable Sanjay and Lady Constables Pooja and Sonia.
Before I started writing this piece, I casually googled ‘media and disability’. Interestingly, most results were pertaining to the role of the media, portrayal of disability, some academic papers on the subject and so on. Well, that’s typically what comes to mind when you throw these two words together at anyone.
