Can the historic Paralympic medal tally alter our perception of disability?

Before I delve into this piece, I’d like to congratulate Team MxM on their tenth anniversary. Feels like it was eons ago, when I joined the team in August 2011. As my Editor handed me varied assignments, I saw myself mature and learn. Even today, I credit a great deal to MxM for helping me refine my writing style and develop a deeper understanding of issues. I continue my association with the team, with this fortnightly column on Media and Disability, with the belief that awareness can help create an empathetic society.

 

Opening the door to opportunities

The Eyeway helpline was set up in response to a flurry of calls from people across the country, sharing their respective challenges due to vision impairment. Callers asked us about ways to restart their education, how to secure a job, what provisions were available for their social security, ways of operating a phone or a computer and so on.

Sharing information and guiding them to lead independent lives despite blindness, established a credibility for the Eyeway team among the community. Often beneficiaries would spread the word, channeling new clients to us.

Taking action against harassment

Workplace harassment is not unheard of. Women often face sexual overtures from their male colleagues in professional space. And hence, the government has mandated organisations to have a Sexual Harassment Policy to safeguard their rights and dignity.

 
 
If the woman is disabled in any way, her vulnerability is amplified. 25-year-old Priyanka (name changed) is totally blind and works as a Probationary Officer in a Bank in Maharashtra. Despite her vision impairment, Priyanka aspired to become physically and financially independent.
 
 

Delhi Police gets ready to resume self-defence training programmes for women

The classes, which were briefly discontinued in 2020 due to the pandemic, were held online prior to this.

Amid a decline in COVID-19 cases in the national capital, the Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) has written to RWAs, NGOs, educational institutions and hospitals across the city for conducting self-defence training programmes for women and girls, officials said on Sunday.

Only 54% public buildings are disabled-friendly, govt. tells HC

Only 21,063 have accessible parking space and 13,035 have accessible staircase

The Director for the Welfare of the Differently Abled has informed the Madras High Court that of the 49,550 public buildings in Tamil Nadu, only 26,769 had ramps and hand-rails at the main entrance. Further, only 21,063 had accessible vehicle parking space and just 13,035 buildings had been provided with accessible staircase.

Visually impaired students get a taste of the beautiful game

Footballers know that they need to keep their eye on the ball, at all times. But what if they cannot see?

The sound of the ball and goalkeepers and coaches alerting from both ends of the pitch is what the visually-impaired work with on a football field.

A three-day football residential camp organised for visually-impaired participants came to an end with football matches for both boys and girls held between Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra teams.

A trip to remember

Getting out of the home, camping, trekking and spending time with friends has become more of a fantasy in this new normal, especially for special needs children and their caregivers.

As a parent of a neuro-diverse child, I continue to experience this. With schools closed and therapy classes unavailable, the turns of events since last year has taken a toll on people, physically, mentally and emotionally. This has had an effect on stress levels and behaviour, making things more difficult for parents.

Features and standards essential for accessible travel

The Harmonised Guidelines and Space Standards for Barrier Free Built Environment Persons with Disability and elderly persons, which was released by the Ministry of Urban Development in 2016 has specified the features that accessible buses should possess.

Apart from having low floors, buses should have handrails and foot flights installed in addition to a hydraulic lift or a pull-out foldable ramp.

A new lease of life

22-year-old Nikita Ghagre suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, an eye condition that results in gradual sight loss. Growing up in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Nikita managed her daily life and education with partial vision. She struggled to read the blackboard from a distance and had to hold the printed textbooks very close to decipher the contents.

Himani Bundela, who is visually impaired, is a teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Agra. The 25-year-old revealed that she would use the KBC prize money to start an inclusive coaching centre where differently-abled and other kids can study together.

Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) season 13 was launched a week ago and the show has already got its first crorepati. Himani Bundela took over the hot seat on Monday (August 31) and crossed the 15-question mark to win one crore. As per the channel promo, the 25-year-old, who is visually impaired, managed to win Rs 1 crore.
