iPhones can now alert visually impaired how far away others are

San Francisco, November 1

The latest beta version of iOS packs a feature that can help visually impaired users to effectively maintain social distancing by indicating how far away other people are from them.
 

Apart from detecting the presence of people, it also measures the distance to people in the view of the iPhone's camera, TechCrunch reported on Saturday.

The feature should be available to iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max running the iOS 14.2 release candidate, said the report.

Giridhar NV was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering hen he lost his vision completely. Mechanical engineering is especially challenging for someone who is completely blind but thanks to technology Giridhar finished his programme with distinction.

It was 2017 and Giridhar NV had just finished celebrating his 20th birthday with friends at home. He was living his childhood dream of studying mechanical engineering and was entering his third year at the CMR Institute of Technology in Bengaluru.

Bombay HC directs BMC to pay salaries to blind employees absent during Covid-19 pandemic

In a major relief to the blind employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Bombay high court (HC) on Wednesday directed the civic body to compensate employees by paying them salary arrears in two parts. The court held that the action of the BMC of not paying salaries to specially-abled employees for not attending work due to the pandemic was discriminatory and illegal. The BMC is to pay the employees the arrears in two parts – one before Diwali, and the second instalment after 45 days of paying the first instalment.

Sensory park for people with disabilities to come up at Sector 22

A special park will come up in Sector 22, which will focus on sensory engagement and be designed to encourage people of all abilities to play together, especially children.

The project is being anchored by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) and its board of directors will be presented with the final plan on October 27 for the approval.

Advocating for his rights

Pranjal Patil took over as Sub-Collector of Thiruvanthapuram in 2019, becoming the country’s first blind woman IAS officer. 25-year-old Beno Zephine from Chennai was the first blind person to be inducted into the Indian Foreign Service. Over the years, persons with vision impairment have actively served and made a mark in the civil services.

Visually challenged rank holder moves CAT seeking IAS posting

CHENNAI: The Central Administrative Tribunal’s Chennai bench issued a notice to the Central government and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to respond to a plea moved by M Puranasunthari, a visually impaired 25-year-old woman from Madurai, who secured 286th rank in the Civil Services Examination (CSE), 2019.

Two like minded men  joined together and started a free hostel by name Andhara Jeeva Belaku Samasthe for Visually challenged children on 1st of July 2018 at 1st cross,1st building, Siddheshwar Nagar, Ranebennur-581115

Our main intension is to bring the rural area Visually challenged children to the main stream and making them self dependent.

We are providing free food, shelter, college fee, transport and medical facilities, right now13 girls are availing the facilities given by us, We are expecting more to join in the next academic year,

Farzana Shaikh was born sighted to a middle class family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Just as she completed Class X, she lost her eye sight after contracting brain fever. The whole family was in shock and the young girl’s life suddenly came to a standstill.

There comes a point in life when everyone needs a bit of help. As I write this piece, I am writhing in pain. On any given day, I score myself quite high on the strength quotient when it comes to overcoming challenges, even physical discomfort. But not today. I sought professional help, acknowledging my inability to deal with the situation.
