Visually-challenged flood-hit to receive aid

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram-headquartered Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) is planning to mobilise funds for the visually-challenged who are affected by flood. 

“We have given direction to all our members to contribute to our special account to be created for helping those affected,” said KFB executive director R Sasidharan Pillai. The fund will be utilised to help rebuild houses, loss of livelihood etc. Last year KFB collected Rs 3.5 lakh, of which Rs1 lakh was donated to Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). 

New optic nerve therapy to offer aid to blind

Washington: Scientists are developing a technology that would circumvent the eyeball in order to deliver the message directly to the brain in case of visually impaired people.

Researchers from EPFL in Switzerland and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Italy will be doing this by stimulating the optic nerve with intraneural electrode known as OpticSELINE.
 

The study was published in the journal 'Nature Biomedical Engineering'.

Keep size of currency notes same to help visually impaired: HC to RBI

Mumbai: Expressing displeasure over frequent changes in features of currency notes, the Bombay high court on Thursday said that the Reserve Bank of India should at least retain the sizes of different denominations so as to enable visually impaired identify the notes easily.

“Do whatever you want to do with the colour and design of the notes, but keep at least their size same,” said the division bench of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Bharati Dangre.

Changing features of currency notes, coins often not proper, says Bombay HC

The court was hearing a petition filed by the National Association of the Blind, claiming new currency notes and coins posed difficulty for the visually impaired people in identifying and distinguishing them.

Changing the size and other features of currency notes often is “not proper” especially because a visually impaired person spends years to figure out the dimensions and other features of a banknote or coin, the Bombay High Court said.

Google Docs gets 'live edits' feature for visually impaired users

Google Docs is making it easier for the visually impaired to keep track of real-time updates made by collaborators in a given document with a new feature.
A 'Live edits' feature allows users to view a periodically updated summary of changes in a convenient sidebar, according to the official blog.
To enable the feature, open the Accessibility settings and check 'Turn on screen reader support' and then select 'Show live edits'.

BENGALURU: Refractive errors are the most common treatable cause of visual impairment. These are optical imperfections that prevent the eye from properly focusing light, thus causing blurred vision. The primary refractive errors are near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia. These can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, or can be permanently treated with laser surgery.

YouTuber Husna from Thiruvananthapuram proves disability is no barrier to pursue one’s ambition

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  A disability cannot stop a person from pursuing their ambition. Husna Ameen, 27, who suffers from visual impairment, has just completed her post-graduation in English literature and is a computer trainer. Husna is currently running a YouTube Channel, ‘English Insights with Husna’, which has got nearly 608 subscribers and already touched 1,000 views.
