RAJSHAHI: Some 100 visually impaired people were given white canes here on Sunday for making them safe and secured during their mobility, reports BSS.

Zila Parishad authorities provided the canes at a simple ceremony in the city.

Zila Parishad Chairman Muhammad Ali Sarker, Chief Executive Officer Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj, Panel Chairman Naimul Huda and General Secretary of National Blind Welfare Association Habibur Rahman Khan joined the distribution ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Muhammad Ali Sarker said instead of neglecting the physically challenged people, they should be built as an efficient workforce to make a prosperous Bangladesh.

The government should take up long-term plans to solve the existing problems faced by the country’s physically challenged people instead of relying on relief-based approaches.

He viewed that the charity-based approaches and projects don’t yield desired result as they leave out a large part of the physically challenged population, who need it the most.

Terming the physically-challenged people as an integral part of the society, Ali Sarker observed that overall development of the nation is not possible, excluding the huge population.

He called for creating better scopes for education and vocational training to create more employment opportunities for the challenged people.
