By July 2016, the Government plans to make 75 railway stations and all 21 international airports across India disabled-friendly, as part of its ‘Accessible India’ campaign.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which will be launching the campaign in October, said that at least 4,500 important buildings across big cities and all domestic terminals will also be made completely accessible by 2019.

“The initiative will begin with the identification of public places that are inaccessible to the differently-abled and need minor structural changes, including ramps for wheelchairs or tactile strips and braille signage for the visually challenged,” said Mukesh Jain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

“We have selected 48 cities in this country, which include tier I and II cities, and asked the State Governments to give us the list of 100 buildings in each of these cities. We will make all these 4,800 buildings accessible through retro-fitting after doing access-audit,” he said.
