All offices in women and child dept to be made disabled-friendly
New Delhi: Women and child development department of Delhi govt has issued directions to officials to make all offices disabled-friendly as per the guidelines of the Accessible India campaign
In an internal communication to district offices, juvenile
justice committees, child welfare committees, and other related offices, the department has shared guidelines specifically prepared for infrastructure under the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA), such as police stations prisons, and disaster mitigation centers, to ensure accessibility and usability for persons with disabilities.

In Delhi, the child welfare committees, juvenile justice board and other such institutions fall under the department of women and child development.
Officials said persons with disabilities must be provided equal access to all facilities and services provided to the public, and with this intention, the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities has launched a nationwide Accessible India campaign.

Officials said that guidelines issued under the Accessible India campaign contain a detailed note highlighting the designs of rooms, doors, floors, stairs, washrooms, offices and other built-up structures to make them hassle free and easily accessible for persons with disabilities, including children.
“The guidelines also emphasise that  the existing infrastructure should be suitably modified to enhance accessibility features and assistance for persons with disabilities in a time-bound manner as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act,” said an official.

The guidelines have noted that sign languages and other communications systems such as Braille, augmentative and
alternative modes, and formats of communication should be promoted wherever possible.
Though the guidelines are not new, a senior Delhi govt official said the MHA had shared its copy with the chief secretaries and administrator of all Union territories in April this year, urging them at the earliest.
