Resolute support of friends in class, the management and teachers was what propelled vision-impaired Gokulapriya of Kumutha Matriculation Higher Secondary School to stand tall among visually challenged students at the state-level.

Daughter of farm labourers belonging to Sokkanurkumarapalayam in neighbouring Tirupur district, Gokulapriya who lost vision gradually while studying in Plus One, and one point, turned completely blind despite treatment, has scored a total of 1,167, with above 190 marks in all subjects: 195 in Tamil, 190 in English, 197 in Business Maths, 195 in Accountancy, 198 in Economics and 192 in Commerce.

Though Gokulapriya’s parents were not literate, they were keen on sustaining her education. As an SSLC student at Kunnathur Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Gokulapriya had scored 428 out of 500. Blindness has not deterred Gokulapriya’s ambition to become a District Collector.“My friend Sivaparvathi, in fact, spent more time on preparing me for the exam,” Gokulapriya said. Sivaparvathi, incidentally, is the school-topper with 1,170 marks.

The school management was elated over Gokulapriya’s feat made possible by unrelenting support by friends and teachers. School Correspondent Janakarathinam, Secretary Aravindan, Headmistress Vasanthi and others felicitated Gokulapriya and her friends who were on cloud nine.

Gokulapriya called on the District Collector S. Prabakar.
