DAPD continues visual impairment advocacy

Fri, 10/14/2016 - 11:19 -- geeta.nair

The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD Inc.) is continuing its advocacy on visual impairment with a week of activities.

Visual Awareness Week and the 11th National Dollar Day was launched at the DAPD’s office in Goodwill on Monday 10 October 2016.

Visual Awareness Week is dedicated to informing and sensitizing the public about the challenges that the visually impaired face and how they can assist them in making their day to day life easier.

“The main objective is to let persons know where we are and all the information on Vision 20/20, The Right to Sight Project. We also want to raise the awareness of the use of the white cane,” Vice President of DAPA, Earnica Esprit said.

Esprit also stated that special emphasis would be placed on the use of the white cane because “many times we see persons assisting blind and visually impaired persons without the use of the white cane”.

“Why is it important? Why does a person who is visually impaired or blind need a white cane? As well as what the public is supposed to know, in terms of how they go about treating a person with the use of the white cane,” Esprit noted.

As part of Visual Awareness Week, educational sessions will be held at the Goodwill Primary School and the Kelleb John Laurent Primary School on Tuesday 11th October and Wednesday 12th October, 2016 respectively.

White Cane Day will be held on Friday, October 14th 2016 and a Dinner in the Dark will be held at Fort Young Hotel on Saturday, October 15th.
