She was allegedly raped on May 5 in Karol Bagh

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Thursday said that it had granted a compensation of ₹25,000 to a visually impaired woman (20) who was allegedly raped on May 5 in Karol Bagh.

“The woman belongs to the poorest section of the society. The Commission had called for an urgent meeting and has allotted an immediate compensation to her so that the family can ensure a proper door is installed in the jhuggi immediately. Also, the DCW has approached the court, seeking compensation for the woman,” DCW said in a statement.

She was allegedly raped when she was alone at her residence. “Her jhuggi was burnt in October due to which they do not have a door. Taking advantage of the situation, a man entered and raped the visually impaired woman when her mother had stepped out to fetch water,” the DCW stated. The commission further said that a blind school was contacted to ensure the woman’s education.

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “Those who have less in life should have more in law. It pained us to see the condition of the visually impaired girl. We will leave no stone unturned to support her. I request the society to also come forward to help her.”
