A delegation of differently abled people met the Bharatiya Janata Party Uttarakhand unit president Ajay Bhatt demanding a strong Divyang Ayog, reservation in politics and some amendments in Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. In a memorandum submitted to the BJP State president, the delegation has demanded the restructuring of Divyang welfare committee at the State level.
Speaking to The Pioneer, the State president of Uttarakhand Divyang Ekta Manch, Sandeep Arora said, “We want the restructuring of empowered State Divyang welfare committee and the specially abled persons be allowed to become the office bearers of the committee. Our main demands include formation of State commission for differently abled persons, a university for them in Haridwar, reservation to fight elections from Panchayat level to Parliamentary elections as per OBC reservation category.”
He said that after a long struggle of the differently-abled persons of the State, they had come under one banner of ‘Ekta Manch’ but the BJP Government had not done anything for the welfare of the people with special needs.
Besides this, the delegation has also demanded an interpretor in every Government department for these people with special needs. Recruitment of two teachers in every school has also been made in the memorandum.
“Twenty one types of categories have been included in the Act but the reservation is not made in the same ratio. The backlogs in all kinds of jobs must be filled with 4 per cent reservation to specially abled persons. Also 4 per cent reservation be given in private sector companies,” added Arora.
The people who are inflicted with in-curable diseases like cancer, Parkinsons, acid attack must also get same share in the reservation category as others, added Arora.
