A 58-year-old man, who the police said was partially visually impaired, died after he fell on the tracks and was crushed by a train at Mandi House Metro station on Friday evening.
The incident, which took place during peak traffic hours in the evening, delayed Metro services for over an hour, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said.
Delhi Police officials said the man, identified as Vinod Kumar Pathak, fell on the tracks around 7.35pm, and came under an incoming train from Yamuna Bank going towards Dwarka Sector-21. Police officials said the Pathak’s family members told them he suffered from partial visual impairment.
The CCTV footage shows the man appeared to be walking on the platform towards the train with “no sense of his surroundings.”
“Initially it seemed like a suicide attempt, but the man seems to have slipped from the platform and fallen. Initial findings seem to show that he had some partial visual impairment. The CCTV footage has also corroborated that,” said a senior police official privy to the investigation.
Official said Pathak was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. No suicide note was recovered from him.
“We are not striking down any possibilities as yet. These are just the initial findings,” the official added.
DMRC officials said the man was crushed under the train. “His body was fished out of the second passenger car near the fourth door. The train had run over his body,” the official said.
