He is a people- friendly administrator, a fiction writer, an organizer and a Good Samaritan. Meet this multi-facet physically disabled OAS officer Dr Biraja Prasad Routray (42), who is now officiating as the Deputy Collector in the Kendrapada Collectorate.
His passion is literature and he has made some contribution to the Odia literature for sure, thanks to his vision and flair for writing. Though, he is a disabled person but he has overcome the hardship and has been working for the socio-economic upliftment of the disabled persons by providing artificial limbs to them free of cost.
Routray as the Deputy Collector in Kendrapada Collectorate has won accolades and admirations from all strata of life across the State. He has lent support to the disabled persons by forming Punarbash-an organization for the rehabilitation of physically challenged persons.
The young and talented officer, Dr Routray was a normal human being till 2006 . But he became physically disabled after he met a fatal road mishap in 2006. Yet he did not lose his heart for being disabled and is leading a life with wheel chair with spinal injury and neckdown paralysis. Rather, he vowed to make his presence felt in the society by moving ahead against all odds and worked for the cause of the disabled persons.
“When I was undergoing treatment at Olatpur, I decided to end my life as I did not want to live a life getting sympathy from others. But I came across the sufferings of a series of disabled persons. It gives me an inspiration and ray of hope to live and also to work for the disabled persons,” said Routray, while talking to this paper.
He later started the Punarbasa at his village in Madhapur. He provided free physiotherapy, artificial limbs and supportive aids distribution camps. Nearly, 100 disabled persons have got the much needed succour from his organisation. He also organises specially speech and hearing camps, mentally retarded and cerebral palsy free camps at his organisation in regular intervals with the contribution of his near and dear ones and also from own money.
Dr Routray has written over five short story books ( Gahali Arapate , Bahubachan, Pratipakshya Ra Hasa, Bisam Bahu, Purna O Sunya) , four poetry collections ( Kemiti Bhijaye Barsa , Attama Darsan , Sandhikal and Abhiseka Hrudayara) , along with one essay book ( Smruti O Bismruti). His poems have been translated into Bengali.
He always depicts characters from the day- to- day society and tries to reflect the challenges and problems that the human beings face in the present society, said Routray’s wife Banasmita Nayak, a great fan of her husband’s creative skill.
