Seek action against official for ridiculing two visually impaired persons

The Joint Action Committee of the Associations for the Disabled is planning to stage an agitation on Wednesday to protest against the alleged behaviour of M. Rajendran, Commissioner, Tamil Nadu State Co-operative Societies Election Commission, towards two persons with disabilities.

In a press release, the committee alleged that Mr. Rajendran had ridiculed two visually impaired persons who had come to his office to submit a petition with regard to the co-operative societies elections and hurt their sentiments.

The two persons, had, in 2013, applied for the posts of directors of cooperative societies in Chennai and Dharmapuri, but their applications had been rejected. They had approached the commissioner on March 16, when the incident took place, the release said.

A complaint was lodged with the police in this regard, but there has been no action till now.

The protest is being organised demanding action against Mr. Rajendran.

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 states the intentional insulting or intimidating with intent to humiliate of a person with a disability can be penalised. The protest will take place near the Teynampet Kamadhenu supermarket.
