In U.K., a visually impaired woman undertook an amazing challenge. Martine Brooks, 56, drove eight miles along the Great Barford bypass, in Bedfordshire, with the Mayor of Bedford, Frank Branston, in the back. Brooks’ friend and navigator Steve Clarke challenged her to do so. What next? Branston agreed to accompany her on the ride. What’s more, it was aimed to raise £5,000 (approximately Rupees 3,95,000) for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, U.K., on its 75th anniversary. They developed a method of communication, with Steve telling Martine how fast to go while she drove the car, estimating the speed from the selected gear and the sound of the engine. The pair started practising in a car park one year ago before moving onto a disused airfield as Martine, who has been blind for 25 years, gained confidence. "It's been a fantastic experience," she said. "On the day I just want to be able to drive properly at a speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour and enjoy it," she said before the event. She went on to add, "It's more exciting than a coffee morning." Brooks has reached speed of up to 65 miles per hour in a normal car. On the day of the event, she completed the challenge in a dual-controlled Clio.
