Enhancing accessibility with technology

Thu, 07/26/2012 - 10:19 -- admin

How to make textbooks and workbooks accessible to students affected with low vision?

Convert the pictures in the text and workbook to Power Point slides and then show them using a desktop computer, a multi-media projector and a screen. This way, an illustration in a textbook can be enlarged up to 100 times making it clearly visible to students.

Ms Lanka 2005 ‘ Beauty for a Cause ’ was organised by Technique International and co-sponsored by State Pharmaceutical Corporation (Sri Lanka) and other organisations.

They donated several equipments to the ‘Ratmalana Blind School’ (Sri Lanka) for the benefit of the low vision students. These include, multi-media projector Min.1600 ANSI lumens. Long life light source; Desktop Computer with C.D./D.V.D. drive; Microsoft Power Point software. Remote mouse; Projection Screen – 5’ x 5’ foldable with Tripod; 3 manual typewriters and an Electronic typewriter.

Organisers felt that using technology would enable low vision students to interact with the teacher and non-visually impaired children.
