THE NATIONAL Association for the Blind (NAB) in association with Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF) celebrated the International White Cane Day on Friday. The celebrations included a fashion show and a talent hunt competition amongst visually impaired students from institutes across Chandigarh and Punjab. The intent was to encourage the academic as well as overall personality development of the visually impaired students and provide them with a platform where they could showcase their talent. Nishu Singal, UT director (social welfare department) was the chief guest.

Vinod Chadha, honarary president, National Association for the Blind, said, “I would like to thank Amway Opportunity Foundation for their continuous support towards the visually impaired. Their spirits confirm that nothing is impossible and no disability can restrain anyone from achieving great heights. Looking at the talent of these children, I can proudly say that they are no less than the rest of society.”

Nishu Singal promised to organise a fashion show for special persons on December 3 on World Disabled Day.

The talent show, open to all visually impaired students from participating institutes, was divided into 2 categories: Individual and Group, with the individual category further classified into low-vision and total visual impairment categories. The fashion show was organised exclusively for girl students. Both the competitions witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 85 visually impaired students.

A distinguished panel of judges adjudged both the fashion show as well as the talent hunt activities. Select candidates who excelled in the contest were given an opportunity to showcase their talent on the stage. The shortlisted candidates from the fashion show will further participate in Princess India contest in Mumbai in November.

The event ended with prize distribution ceremony. A total of 16 talented participants got cash prizes and two teams got cash prize in group song.
