In the tour, unearth the lesser known stories of Mehrauli Archaeological Park & Qutub Complex which encompasses some of the most enigmatic relics of the second city of Delhi, dating back from the first fortified capital, Lal Kot, up till British period.

We would start at 10 am and cover the park in first 3 hours. Then we would have nice scrumptious lunch in the natural setting like a mini picnic and move to the Qutub Complex. We start the second leg of tour at 2 pm and would cover the place in next 2 hours.

To brief about the place, Mehrauli Archaeological Park is an archaeological area spread over 200 acre and consists of over 70 historically significant but lesser known monuments of Delhi. It encompasses ruins of dozens of tombs, palace buildings and colonial follies.

You'll see Mehrauli's most impressive structure, the Jamali Kamali mosque, attached to the tomb of the Sufi poet Jamali. A lot of untold stories are linked to Jamali Kamali, and of late it is being counted as one of the haunted heritage sites in India.

Then we move to the time-ravaged tombs of Khan Shahid & Balban.

To the west is the Rajon ki Baoli, a majestic 16th-century step-well with a monumental flight of steps. The baoli is one of the highlights of Mehrauli Archaeological Park and a favourite with every visitor.

On the peak of a grassy mound stands a stone canopy called Metcalfe's Canopy, built in 1850s by Charles Metcalfe, an Indophile British. It is the folly's lighthouse setting that soak your senses with overwhelming passions. The Metcalfe's bridge or carriage was built to access the estate 'Dilkusha'(heartwarming).

Several controlled streams of water lead to a tank called Dovecote or Metcalfe's Boathouse. The tank was dated to the Lodi Dynasty period. This was refurbished by Metcalfe for use, for boating and swimming.

Post lunch we would move to the world heritage site of Qutub Complex, a World Heritage listed site dating back to the late 12th century. The image of the Qutub Minar is synonymous with Delhi. Much like India Gate, we find it on practically every book, pamphlet, publication on Delhi. There is no doubt to Qutub's importance to history & much of it is deeply contested.

Qutub Minar (Qutub means axis in Arabic language) at  120 meters, is the tallest rubble minaret in the world. Qutub Minar, along with the ancient and medieval monuments surrounding it, forms the Qutub Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After entering the complex, walking past the Mughal Gardens we veer right to the Alai Minar. This was the Muslim ruler Ala-ud-din Khilji's grand attempt to build an identical tower twice the height of Qutub Minar.

Then we would stroll south to the Tomb of Imam Zamin,a saint from Turkestan, next to which is the old gateway to the Qutub Minar complex, the arched Alai Darwaza

Nearby is the star attraction, the Qutub Minar, a 237.8-feet-high (72.5-meter- high) tower started in 1193. The Delhi Sultans who contributed to the site are Qutbuddin Aibak, Shamsuddin Iltutmish, Alauddin Khalji & Feroz Shah Tughlaq. In popular memory Qutbuddin Aibak, the first ruler in the 'slave dynasty' is most easily identifiable with Qutub Minar. The Qutb is said to have been named after him too. However, this is a contested fact whether Aibak actually even started building the Qutub.

Next to the tower is the first mosque constructed in North India following the country's Islamic conquest, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid. It remained Delhi's principal mosque right until 1360.

Within the courtyard of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid is the Iron Pillar.
Standing at almost 22.9 feet (seven meters) high and weighing over six tons, an extraordinary feature of this pillar (98 percent pure iron) is that it has not corroded for at least 1600 years.

We conclude the tour with the tomb of Ilturmish, son- in-law and successor of Qutbu'd-Din Aibak. It is a step further in the development of Indo-Islamic architecture when the builder had ceased to depend on the utilization of material removed from Hindu temples.
