HYDERABAD: Wednesday was not just another day for Pavithra and her friends. Dressed in colourful clothes, they were getting ready for a song and dance performance at their school. Even while Pavithra could not see the festivities, she could sense the air of celebrations around her.
“It is a big day. I cannot see but it is a colourful day in my life,” she said. They were commemorating the 208th birth anniversary of Louis Braille at Government High School for Blind at Malakpet.
“It’s the birth anniversary of the man who invented Braille script to help us. We are very happy to participate in the programme,” she said.
Following the celebrations by Women Development, Child Welfare & Disabled Welfare Department at a Louis Braille Park, Government High School for Blind at Malakpet organised a cultural event to rejoice the day. The department members and visually impaired students paid tributes to Braille by garlanding his statue at the park.
P Sai Baba, former chairman of AP Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation was the chief guest. Another student Shweta, who was seen trying to pick up the beats of performers during the celebrations at the school, said, “I am dressed up for dandiya for which I have been rehearsing for several days. All our teachers and my friends have worked hard for today.”
The institute provides schooling and accommodation to 70 blind girls, both from primary and secondary school. Shailja, the hostel warden, chose the occasion to highlight that the building was constructed in the 1970s and has not been expanded ever since.
“On this day, which is of importance to the blind students, I bring forth the issue that there are only seven rooms for 70 students in the hostel. It is tough to accommodate all of them in this little space. In these constraints, two of them have to share one bed and eight girls are stuffed in one room. We have written to the Road and Building department to expand the hostel,” she said.
The school runs with 21 teachers that include two Vidya volunteers. The medium of instruction is either Urdu or Telugu.
