Jawaharlal Nehru University has turned into a haven for the physically challenged students. In order to make it number one “disable-friendly” university of the country, the varsity has decided to change the name of “blind curve” point at the request of students associated with its Equal Opportunity Cell.

Also, the university is  inaugurating a bus service meant especially for differently-abled students with features of a ramp. There are 261 students in category of visually impaired or physically disabled students of which 154 are pursuing research in the varsity.

“I have tried everything to make JNU a barrier-free campus where everyone can gain knowledge...There are more than 200 students with physical disabilities and we have facilitated them with wheel chairs; laptops for visually impaired and now a special bus with extra features to ease their commute across the campus would be inaugurated on Wednesday,” the out-going Vice Chancellor of JNU, Prof SK Sopory told The Pioneer.

He said  on request of students with visual impairment, the varsity would change the name of “blind curve” which is at a point inside the huge JNU campus. “We are thinking about other word that could replace the term ‘blind’ from the curve. Our student’s have made the suggestion as it is discriminatory, “ Sopory said.

Speaking at the last media interaction of his tenure, Sopory highlighted that JNU visually imapaired students won 15 medals in 7th Delhi State Para Medic Atheletic meet and six medals in National Para Medic Atheletic meet in 2015.
