The event is a unique initiative wherein the visually impaired actually become part of the Rally by navigating the rally drivers on basis of a braille road map.

The second edition of the ‘Blind Man Car Rally’ was flagged off by Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), UT and. Kamlesh Kumar, DPI (Schools), Chandigarh. The rally was organized by Round Table India, a voluntary organization of young men between the ages of 18 to 40 years.

Three participants having least penalty points were adjudged as winners. The first prize went to Danish Gill and his navigator Rakesh. Atul Nandwani and his navigator Anju Bala finished second while Kanwaljeet and Anuj Sharma settled for third spot.

Prize money of `10,000, `8000 and `6000 for first, second and third prize winners, respectively, was shared between the car drivers and the navigators. The rally saw participation of 50 cars, involving an equal number of drivers and the visually impaired. The Rally was flagged off from the Institute for the Blind, Sector-26 Chandigarh and after moving around the city for around 50 kms, ended up at the Institute itself.

Sharing his experience, Shubham, a 17 year old student of the Institute said, “I can’t explain it in words what a wonderful feeling it was! I will tell my friends also to take part next time”.

Another participant, Anuj, an 18 year old said, “We are always helped in finding our way but today for the first time I felt so happy giving directions to someone else.”
