Disability rights groups, organisations and associations that work with persons with disabilities (PwDs) across Tamil Nadu have launched the One Demand Campaign 2025 to increase the monthly disability allowance to ₹6,000.
According to a statement from the campaign group, more than 18 lakh PwDs face multiple barriers, exclusion and discrimination in life, and have to pay a direct disability cost to fulfil the bare minimum needs daily. “The One Demand Campaign 2025 urges the State government to provide a bare minimum monthly disability allowance of ₹6,000 to all PwDs – equivalent to the minimum daily wages assigned by the International Labour Organisation, irrespective of their income ceiling,” it added.
They further demanded that the government provide an additional monthly high support allowance of ₹10,000 to persons with high support needs.
Noting a declining trend in total disbursements, they added: “Analysing the budget statement for the year, the ratio of specific allocations to persons with disabilities to total disbursements has remained at 0.5% in the last three years with only ₹1,704 per month ensured for a PwD for living in Tamil Nadu.”
