Talking books for blind children

Fri, 07/20/2012 - 18:49 -- admin

A master degree student has developed talking books for the blind and is willing to disseminate the method to making them for others to produce teaching materials for the blind.

The blind students can hear birds chirping and learn the information of each kind of bird by touching the Braille alphabet and reliefs of bird pictures. Self-learning with talking books makes it fun for children. Before these books, they thought the sound of bird’s chirping was all similar.

A student at Bangkok School for the Blind said she used to think there were not so many kinds of birds because she never saw them. But the talking books told her there are more than 50 kinds of them.”

Prapawadee is a grade 11 student at the Bangkok School for the Blind. She learnt about various kinds of birds from five talking books. The books won an award in printed teaching material given by Mahidol University.

Siriwan Chart-hi-run-mon-kon, a master degree student at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, developed the talking books, inspired in reading a book and recording her voice for the blind. She said teaching materials for blind children were not sufficient and lacked attractiveness. She spent one and a half year’s inventing the talking books and gave them to the Bangkok School for the Blind.

Talking books about birds have proved popular with the blind children and they called for more such books about other animals to be produced. It seems the more IT technology advances, the more people have ignored childrens books or non technology teaching materials for these poor children.

Siriwan said these children need normal books because they can use technology fluently. Teaching materials are not enough for their learning.

Siriwan is willing to give advice to interested persons on how to make talking books free of charge, to urge book producers to make them for blind children.
