Regaining Hope Through Education and Technology

Satyam Singh, a 29-year-old resident of Uttarakhand’s Nainital district, lost his eyesight more than a decade ago, when he was in Class 10. A genetic condition caused his vision to fade gradually until he could no longer read or see the blackboard. Medical examinations confirmed that there was no cure, and he was forced to discontinue his education.

The years that followed were difficult. Satyam visited several hospitals, hoping for treatment, but his efforts brought little relief. Gradually, he began to accept his condition and focus on living as independently as possible. In 2014, he applied for a disability pension, a UDID card, and a railway concession certificate small but important steps toward rebuilding his life.

Despite these measures, Satyam continued to feel unsure about how to resume his studies or plan for the future. That changed when he discovered the Hamari Vani platform, which connected him to the Eyeway Helpline—a resource dedicated to empowering persons with visual impairment through information, counseling, and training.

Through the Eyeway Helpline, Satyam received guidance on how to continue his education using assistive technology. Counselors introduced him to TalkBack, a screen reader that enables blind users to operate smartphones independently, and helped him access audiobooks for his lessons. With their support, he enrolled in the NIOS open schooling system in 2025 and obtained study materials in accessible audio format from the Sugamya Pustakalaya digital library.

Satyam is now preparing for his board exams and dreams of pursuing higher education. His confidence has grown as he learns to use technology to study, communicate, and plan his goals.

Eyeway continues to assist him—helping him prepare for future government exams, supporting his admission to Class 12, and working toward providing him with a smartphone for better accessibility.
