Shaina Jhaveri, a 28-year-old woman from Mumbai, grew up in a financially stable family and enjoyed a childhood much like any other—filled with education, routine, and aspirations. Her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition that gradually led to severe vision loss. As her sight deteriorated, everyday activities, academic plans, and career dreams became increasingly uncertain.
Shaina completed her schooling with determination—Class 9 through the mainstream system and Classes 10 and 12 via open schooling. She went on to pursue a Diploma in Pre-School Management, reflecting her interest in early childhood education. Motivated to study further, she enrolled in a graduation course in Economics. However, the rapid progression of her vision loss forced her to discontinue her studies after the second year, leaving her and her family deeply concerned about her future independence.
At this critical juncture, Shaina’s parents approached Eyeway, seeking clarity and guidance. Their interaction with the helpdesk marked a significant turning point. Through systematic counselling, Shaina was guided to obtain her Unique Disability Identity (UDID) Card, enabling access to government schemes and essential support services.
