Amrit’s Journey Towards Independence and Higher Education
Amrit Gupta, aged 30, is from Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh. He is a graduate and is married. Amrit experienced vision loss in 2019 due to severe myopia. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, his vision gradually deteriorated, eventually resulting in blindness.
Amrit belongs to a family of five. His father, Sanjay Kumar Gupta, is a shopkeeper, while his mother, Geeta Gupta, is a homemaker. He has one brother and one sister. Amrit came to know about the Eyeway Helpline through Hamari Vaani.

Initially, Amrit’s family was hesitant to allow him to travel outside the home due to concerns about his safety and ability to live independently. The Eyeway Helpline team counselled Amrit and his family, explaining the importance of rehabilitation and skill development. With their guidance and support, the family agreed to allow Amrit to attend an adjustment training course at AICB in Rohini, Delhi.
Amrit successfully completed the adjustment course at AICB, where he developed essential skills for independent living. He received training in computer skills using screen readers and learned to use TalkBack and other accessibility features on smartphones. He also received training in Braille, orientation and mobility using a white cane, daily living skills, communication and personality development, and job readiness.
The training played a significant role in building Amrit’s confidence and independence. With the support and guidance he received, he was able to overcome several barriers, become more self-reliant, and take greater responsibility for his education and future.
After successfully completing the adjustment course, Amrit decided to pursue a B.Ed. in Special Education (Visual Impairment) at Dr. Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University. His journey demonstrates how appropriate counselling, rehabilitation, family support, and skill development can empower a person with vision loss to build confidence, achieve greater independence, and pursue higher education and future career opportunities.
