Kundan Kumar Overcomes a Six-Year Struggle to Access ATM Banking Services
Kundan Kumar, a 31-year-old person with visual impairment, lives in Kota, Rajasthan. He was born in Munger District, Bihar, to Sh. Charit Modi and Mira Devi. He completed his Class 10 from Kumarpur High School, Munger, in 2010 and Class 12 from Lakhisari Inter College, Lakhisarai, Bihar, in 2012.
In 2003, Kundan suffered from diarrhoea and fever. Following a drug reaction, the medicine adversely affected both his eyes, resulting in the loss of his eyesight. In 2016, he successfully cleared the RRB Group D examination and joined the Indian Railways. He was subsequently posted in Kota, Rajasthan, where he continues to work.
Kundan had a bank account with Indian Bank in Munger, Bihar. For nearly six years, he faced difficulties in obtaining an ATM card from the bank. Despite repeatedly visiting the branch, the bank staff refused to issue him an ATM card because of his blindness and repeatedly sent him back without resolving the matter.
Later, one of Kundan's friends informed him about the Eyeway Helpdesk and suggested that he seek assistance from the helpline. Kundan contacted the Eyeway Helpdesk and explained his difficulty in obtaining an ATM card. The counselor shared the relevant RBI guidelines with him and advised him to visit the bank and present the guidelines to the Branch Manager. He was also advised to connect the counselor with the Branch Manager over a call if the manager refused to consider his request.
Kundan subsequently visited the bank and attempted to connect the Eyeway Counselor with the Branch Manager. However, the Branch Manager initially refused to speak with the counselor and asked Kundan to leave the bank. The Eyeway Counselor then obtained the contact number of the bank's peon from Kundan and, through the peon, was able to communicate with the Branch Manager. After two to three conversations, the Branch Manager agreed to reconsider the matter and checked the bank's internal departmental guidelines. The manager then acknowledged that Kundan had been denied an ATM card due to a lack of awareness regarding the applicable provisions for persons with visual impairment.
Following the intervention and guidance provided by the Eyeway Helpdesk, the bank issued Kundan both an ATM card and a cheque book. Today, Kundan is able to use his ATM card and withdraw money whenever required. He expressed his happiness and heartfelt gratitude to the Eyeway Helpdesk for supporting him in resolving a long-standing banking issue and helping him access banking services with greater independence and dignity.
