DU drops math awareness from semester exam list

Thu, 10/17/2013 - 12:05 -- deepti.gahrotra

Delhi University has dropped Mathematical Awareness, a foundation course which replaces Building Mathematical Ability for the visually impaired, from the date-sheet of the end-semester exams set to start in November.

Its inclusion in the sheet had caused much confusion among students as well as teachers as it contradicted instructions from Delhi University's equal opportunity cell to teach the course only in the second semester.

Despite EOC's instructions, several colleges were teaching the mathematical awareness course to one group of students in the first semester. Ramjas started teaching the course after spotting an exam scheduled for it on November 29.

However, in the updated schedule, there is no exam on the course. The test on Building Mathematical Ability is to be held, as per the previous date-sheet, on November 29. Visually impaired students will now be writing three foundation course papers this semester and five in the next.

The problem was faced by visually impaired students taking this course in lieu of Building Mathematical Ability who found themselves in Group B this semester. In every college, the first year students have been divided into two groups-A and B-for the foundation courses.

Each group studies four of eight papers in the first semester, switching papers in the second. The math courses were for Group B to study in the first semester.
