Testing times continue for specially-abled students

Mon, 06/08/2015 - 16:19 -- geeta.nair

Guwahati: Monica Devi, a student of Guwahati Blind School, is 100% visually-impaired and impoverished. With fantastic HSLC results to back her, however, she hasn't stopped dreaming of a better future. Monica secured a first division in the HSLC exam and obtained letter marks in three subjects.

Monica is not an exception. Many of the differently-abled candidates who appeared for this year's HSLC examination have performed exceedingly well. However, they continue to face a number of challenges like limited facilities for the handicapped in educational institutions, lack of special books and study material in Braille and dearth of employment opportunities.

"I am familiar with Braille and I want to study arts. But HS books are not available in Braille. If I have to study further, I have to rely on recorded notes. This becomes very expensive. My father's earnings are paltry," she rued.
